3. Creepy Brother/Sister Relationships

When there are 2 children in a family, an older boy and a younger girl, oftentimes what is created is what I call a creepy brother/sister relationship. When you’re little you spend all of your time playing with your siblings because you don’t have your own friends yet and they’re convenient, but I feel that after a certain amount of time that codependency should break. And for people in fortunate sibling situations, like me, that’s the case, but not everyone is so lucky.

People born into a older brother/younger sister existence are at a disadvantage in life because they have an 89% chance of becoming the type of siblings that weird me out most. I fight with my siblings, we barely get along/speak sometimes, and I think that’s natural. When you’re living with a person, or 2 people in my case, everyday for years they will become your pet peeves simply because of proximity. Strangely, creepy brother/sisters are best friends in childhood and it continues right on into adulthood. Now, I love my siblings and we get along better now than when we were kids, but I don’t have a picture of me hugging my older brother as my Facebook profile picture with a caption that includes the words “best friend” and has little keyboard hearts <3 at the end of it.

This is the case of one particularly tragic brother/sister relationship that I encountered via a college acquaintance. This girl’s brother is approximately four years older than her and it was her exact Facebook picture that I was describing earlier. Did I mention that she was piggybacked on him?…Anyway I met her freshman year and I barely knew her but as she was roommates with a friend of mine I got to hear all about her weird weekly phone convos with her brother which always ended with either an “I love you” or a “Can’t wait to see you.” In comparison, I think that my entire freshman year of college I sent tops 4 texts to my brother. Anyways…the epitome of their creepiness comes into play junior year while we were all abroad.

This girl was living with one of my best friends, D, and four other girls in an apartment. No one believed D when she called the other girl strange because of the close relationship she had with her brother, but their opinions quickly changed when he came to visit his darling sister, toting along his incestual beard-girlfriend. I cried as I listened to a story of the brother/sister pair wrestling on this girl’s bed and tickling each other…can someone remind me what flirting consists of again?…But the kicker was that D and another one of her roommates swear that they saw the two kiss. On the lips. While they were rolling around on her bed and the incestual beard sat sullenly to the side.

You can try and say that not all older brother/younger sister relationships are like that, but I’ve found at least a dozen examples of this exact situation and therefore I’m sticking to my perceptions. So please, take this little anecdote as a life lesson for the future. If you have a boy and then a few years later you have a girl go for baby number 3. If your spouse doesn’t want another baby, I don’t care. If you’ve always pictured yourself with the cookie cutter 1 boy 1 girl family, redraw that picture. You will be saving yourself the inevitable therapy bills.

I know they're actually married, but they play a brother and sister in this movieI know they’re actually married, but they play a brother and sister in this movie and it’s exactly the kind of creepiness I mean!

    “Harry wore glasses!” →

“Do you want something to eat?”

    “Ron loved to eat!”

“I read it in this book and…”

“Hermione used to read books!” →

    “How is school going?”

    “It burned down!” →

    OH GOD

    THE LAST ONE THOUGH

    This is hilarious. And accurate.

I mixed the last page of the epilogue (read by the amazing Stephen Fry) with Leaving Hogwarts, changed the levels and unfortunately to make it fit, cut some bits out. But yes. This is what it sounds like.

I can’t believe that in less than 2 weeks I’m going to be going to my last HP midnight premiere. When Deathly Hallows came out I was upset, but I kept thinking that at least I still have the movies to look forward to!, but in a few short days that won’t be true anymore. But now we have the idea of Pottermore and it’s another new HP experience. I’m excited for all of the background stories on characters and extra info, but the jury is still out on my opinion of it being a discussion forum. I really don’t need to know what some little kid thinks about something that happens. And do we have to read the books online to get the extra info? She said we get sorted and follow our Prefects, so is it some type of game? I dunno and we’ll have to wait and see.

  6. I forgot that I even have my own Tumblr because I’ve just been looking through other people’s for so long, but I think with the end of Harry Potter fast approaching it’s time to reblog some HP like crazy!

  7. The Secret of Roan Inish is a movie that I remember from my childhood. I remembered it being Irish, the main character being named Fiona, that a seal was involved, and there was a baby in a floating crib. However, it wasn’t until freshman year of college that I remembered its name. My other Irish friend and I bonded over remembering bits of it. It’s a beautiful film and makes me miss Ireland.
